Frequently Asked Questions

About One Shield Construction

Where are you located and what areas do you serve?

One Shield Construction is based at 1989 Madison Street in Clarksville, TN. We serve Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky within approximately 90 miles of Clarksville, including Montgomery, Robertson, Cheatham, Stewart, Davidson, Sumner, and surrounding counties in Tennessee, and Christian, Todd, Logan, Trigg, and Simpson counties in Kentucky.

How long have you been in business?

Milton Yoder has been in the construction industry since 2013. One Shield Construction was founded in 2023. Our family’s building heritage stretches back to 1958 when Milton’s great-grandfather Simon Yoder settled in Todd County, Kentucky as part of the first Amish community in the state.

Are you licensed and insured in Tennessee and Kentucky?

Yes. One Shield Construction is a licensed contractor operating in Tennessee and Kentucky. We carry general liability insurance on all projects. Ask us for documentation before we begin — any reputable contractor will provide it without hesitation.

Do you handle the entire project or use subcontractors?

Milton personally oversees every project from start to finish. We use trusted trade partners for specialized work such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC — but the build is managed directly by Milton, not handed off to a general subcontractor pool.

How do I get started?

Call or text Milton directly at 931-542-7550. Tell us what you are planning to build, where the property is, and what your general timeline looks like. We will take it from there.

Barndominiums and Post-Frame Buildings

What is post-frame construction and is it a good choice for a home?

Post-frame construction uses large vertical posts spaced several feet apart to carry the structural load, eliminating the need for interior load-bearing walls and a continuous perimeter foundation. It is an excellent choice for barndominiums and custom homes, particularly on rural land. It is generally less expensive per square foot than stick-built construction and can be insulated and finished to any residential standard.

How much does a barndominium cost in Tennessee?

In the Middle Tennessee area, a finished, turnkey barndominium typically costs between $150 and $250 or more per square foot depending on finish level, size, and site conditions. A post-frame shell only costs considerably less. The most accurate estimate comes from walking through your specific land, scope, and goals with us directly.

Can I finance a barndominium with a regular mortgage?

Yes, in many cases. Lender familiarity with post-frame homes has improved significantly. Farm Credit, VA loans, construction-to-permanent loans, and some conventional lenders all work with this building type. See our Financing page for more detail.

How long does it take to build a barndominium?

From first consultation to move-in, a mid-size finished barndominium in the Clarksville area typically takes 10 to 14 months, including design, permitting, and construction. Shell-only builds move faster.

What is the difference between a barndominium and a custom home?

A barndominium is a post-frame structure designed as a primary residence — characterized by open interior spans, metal exterior cladding, and vaulted ceilings. A traditional custom home is typically stick-frame with a continuous foundation and conventional residential architecture. We build both. The right choice depends on your land, your design preferences, and your financing situation.

Custom Homes and Remodels

Do you build traditional stick-frame homes, or only post-frame?

We build both. Post-frame is our primary specialty, but we also build traditional stick-built custom homes for clients whose project, site, or financing requires conventional framing.

Can you work from my own floor plans?

Yes. If you have architectural plans already drawn, we are happy to work from them. If you are starting from scratch, we can refer you to designers we have worked with.

How does a remodel project work with One Shield?

We start with a scope assessment — looking at your space together and identifying what needs to be done before finish work begins. Then we give you a detailed estimate, a work schedule, and daily communication throughout the project. We complete with a full walkthrough before we consider the job done.

How do you handle unexpected issues that come up during a remodel?

We stop, show you what we found, explain the options, and get your direction before proceeding. We never make material decisions on your behalf or use surprises as leverage for change orders.

Do you offer design services or just construction?

We are builders, not architects or interior designers. We can collaborate on layout and flow, refer you to designers we trust, and guide your material selections — but formal architectural design services are handled through third-party professionals.

Process and Pricing

How do I get a quote?

Call or text Milton at 931-542-7550. We discuss your project, visit the site if needed, and provide a detailed written estimate.

What does a quote from One Shield include?

Our estimates break down materials, labor, site work, and any known subcontractor costs. We include a contingency note for any conditions that may affect cost. We give you a number we are confident in — not a lowball figure designed to win the job.

Do you require a deposit? What is your payment structure?

Yes, we require a deposit to secure your project on our schedule. Payment is structured in draws tied to construction milestones — not lump-sum payments up front. We walk through the payment schedule with you before you sign anything.

What areas in Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky do you serve?

We serve a roughly 90-mile radius from our Clarksville, TN base. See our Service Areas page for a full county and city list.

What happens after I contact you?

Milton responds personally. We schedule a conversation to understand your project, visit the site if it makes sense, and put together a realistic estimate. No automated follow-ups, no sales pipeline. Just a direct conversation with your builder.
